What is phishing?
Phishing consists in sending an email to an internet user while pretending to represent an existing company. This email aims to mislead the reader in an attempt to steal personal information.
The emails are designed so as to trigger an impulsive reaction from your side. They announce you a shattering or exciting news and ask you to reply immediately on a false pretext. Generally, these communications are not meant for you personally.
How can you protect yourself?
- Avoid using links attached in an email even if, at first sight, they seem to direct you to a safe website. Certain fraudulent websites may modify the address appearing on your browser in order to cheat on you;
- Never send personal or financial info per email;
- Use antivirus software and firewalls.
WHEN IN DOUBT, always contact the helpdesk of your bank or your local branch.
